HISTORY...

Founded by Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes in 1966 during a ceremony at the Perry Monument at Put-In Bay, the Association of Ohio Commodores has been in existence for over 38 years. Named for the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, Governor Rhodes established the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodores (which encompasses membership in the Association) to honor 60 Ohio businessmen who accompanied him on Ohio’s first international trade mission. Since then, over 300 men and women have been appointed to the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodore as recognition of their contributions to economic development in their communities, and to the State of Ohio.

MEMBERSHIP...

Membership in the Executive Order of the Ohio Commodores is only possible through appointment by Ohio’s Governor in recognition for outstanding contributions to the economic development of the State of Ohio. It is considered Ohio’s “most distinguished honor.”
The Association currently boasts a diverse and dedicated membership of over 200 men and women. 18 charter members of the original Commodores still belong to the Association, and many Ohio families have seen multiple generations achieve membership.
Members include government officials such as members of the Governor’s Cabinet; distinguished university professors and administrators; leaders of trade associations and economic development organizations; and senior executives of large, medium and small manufacturers from across Ohio in a wide variety of industries.

Rob Otteson

This is Rob Otteson. He was one of my students my first year of teaching. He's serving in the United States Army right now and is stationed in Iraq.

Funny thing happened today. I was sitting at my desk and eating my lunch, and the phone rang. I didn't recognize the number, but knew it was long distance. (Based on the area code)

I answered the phone by saying, "Hello?"

The voice responded, "Hey, what's up?"

I said, "Who is this?"

The voice replied, "It's Otteson, Rob Otteson."

I thought to myself, he must be back on leave or something like that. I said to him, "Where are you? You back for a while or what?"

He said, "Baghdad. Baghdad, Iraq." "No way. Seriously? Nuh uh. Really?!"

"Yup," he said.

How cool is that. One of the all time legends from my first year teaching called me from Iraq?!? That's extremely cool, in case you couldn't figure it out.

It sounded like he was doing well, and based on the picture, has been lifting some weights. It was an absolute treat that he would call.

Go, Rob!

By the way, he said camel spiders, portayed on the web as overly aggressive, wildly marauding, and excessively sized, were way over-hyped. I asked him to send me one in the mail. He said he wasn't allowed. Oh well.

Yes, we posed for a picture in clear inner tubes. We were at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Really cool water park, indoors and outdoors. It is the biggest indoor waterpark in the world.

Thanksgiving Day Race - 2007 Results!

Despite struggling up the bridge on the way back in to Cincinnati I finished at 51:34 - over ten minutes better than last year's race time of 1:02 something...

Go me.

Not only that, I passed several former students of mine during the race and wound up finishing ahead of another one that had competed in Columbus, Ohio for the state cross country meet.

Again, go me.


Great event. A little cold and windy to start, but didn't rain during the race, and I ran a personal best.

I am not in this photo below. One reason could be because I probably smoked that guy in the giant green outfit, but the real reason is because it is a photo taken off of the website from the 2005 race in which I did not participate.

Oh, in case you were wondering, the winning time was 30:37. I think I was getting to mile marker 4 at that point.

98th Annual Thanksgiving Day Race - 10K Run & Walk

This will be my third time running this race in Cincinnati. One of the highlights of this race is the perspective you get of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Last year's weather was beautiful, crisp, with that cold misty air that makes the sunlight glimmer.

Fourth street in Newport looked beautiful. The course layout is below.

I told a colleague of mine the other day that I was running in this. He responded with a hint of disbelief and amusement, "Have you been running?" Wait a second, what's that supposed to mean!?!

Anyway...

What I like so much about running this race is that it's a long enough race where I feel like I need to train for it, but not too long that I have become a real runner to complete it. Just enough to stay in shape (and keep of the 45 pounds I lost), but not to where I become an actual runner. (You know the type, Saturday morning, Panera Bread, bright eyed, chippy, with waaay too tight running pants.)

For what it's worth...

I will be running by the Bengals' practice field, and I hear they'll be practicing... Anyone want me to relay them a message?

And finally...

It's a lot better eating turkey, mash potatoes, gravy, and a few helpings of pie after having run 6 miles that morning. At least in my book it is.

Football is coming...

Obviously I'm a big Kings Knights fan. I teach there, I know the kids, and they have a great football program. They were upended last year by the Turpin Spartans and the Harrison Wildcats.

This year they open with Edgewood, but the biggest game should again be the Turpin game, this year at Kings. Here is a write-up on the Cincinnati.com blog about high school sports. It looks like Kings will have their hands full against Turpin once again.

(Virginia), and WR Andy Cruse and LB Luke Kelly (both Miami U.). There could be
a fourth in QB Ryan Martin, a 6-1, 185-pound senior lefty who is the incumbent

Who can play? Anyone who wants to have a glowingly good time while supporting the Kings High School and Junior High golf programs.

What is it? Knight Golf is nine holes played after dark with glow in the dark golf balls. The pins and tees are lit and it is an experience that you will not want to miss.

When? Saturday, Aug. 11. Sign-in begins at 8:30 p.m. and we will tee off around dark (9:15 p.m.).

Where? Greenhills Golf Course, 14 Enfield St., Greenhills, Ohio. 589-3585. (Behind Johnny's Toys and the Greenhills Swimming Pool).

Cost? The cost is $20 per player, or two for $30. All proceeds benefit the Kings Golf Program.

I've highlighted a specific game of interest... Independence currently has the nation's longest winning streak in high school football. "Another season, another Class 4AA. For the seventh-straight time, Independence took home the title. The Patriots are riding a 108-game winning streak into the Ohio vs. USA Challenge." It's quite obvious they've never played a Cincinnati GCL team before. It's not often I root for Elder, but in this case, Go Panthers!

The Kings Knights will be playing in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown against the Edgewood Cougars. Should be a good game. The Knights have a very strong senior class. Should be a good matchup and a possible preview of a playoff game later in the year.

A highlight of this year's Skyline Crosstown Showdown is the Thursday doubleheader at Princeton's Viking Stadium that includes Division I Glen Este, which has qualified for the playoffs two straight years, and a trio of Division II powers – Turpin, Edgewood and Kings – that could start the year ranked in the Ohio state poll. The four schools finished with a combined 38-9 record last season.
