Tickets are on sale for the Burger King Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge high school football event Sept. 1-2, including games at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium.

I've highlighted a specific game of interest... Independence currently has the nation's longest winning streak in high school football. "Another season, another Class 4AA. For the seventh-straight time, Independence took home the title. The Patriots are riding a 108-game winning streak into the Ohio vs. USA Challenge." It's quite obvious they've never played a Cincinnati GCL team before. It's not often I root for Elder, but in this case, Go Panthers!

The Kings Knights will be playing in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown against the Edgewood Cougars. Should be a good game. The Knights have a very strong senior class. Should be a good matchup and a possible preview of a playoff game later in the year.

A highlight of this year's Skyline Crosstown Showdown is the Thursday doubleheader at Princeton's Viking Stadium that includes Division I Glen Este, which has qualified for the playoffs two straight years, and a trio of Division II powers – Turpin, Edgewood and Kings – that could start the year ranked in the Ohio state poll. The four schools finished with a combined 38-9 record last season.

I began following him last year. Thought he was going to be good. He is. MVP for the Mets this year. Boom, I said it.
From last night's game...
NEW YORK (AP) -Fans at Shea Stadium are accustomed to seeing John Maine pitch well. It took a home run for the Mets' best starter to get a curtain call.
Maine's two-run homer, which capped a four-run fourth inning, was pretty much the only surprising thing about his performance Tuesday night. He struck out seven in seven innings to lead New York to an 8-4 win over the woeful Pittsburgh Pirates .

It's a good cartoon for kids, creative, positive, enriching, and smart. (Unlike all the stupid cartoons that are out now)

It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
1 Tip from Tae Kwon Do:
The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans.
If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.
Toss it away from you.... chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse.
RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.
The driver won't see you, but everybody else will.
This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!)
The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in
on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go.
AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
a. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF!
Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car.
Your Air Bag will save you.
If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it.
As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body
in a remote location.
5 A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat
B..) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting
to get into their cars.
C..) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work,
and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone
and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably ! in a zig -zag pattern!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed.
Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch
the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.
The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

San Marco Golf: Dad and Uncle Jim, Wingfoot and Scarsdale
This is the email update my Uncle sent out about his and my dad's golf outings in NY last week...

Hi All,
I have finally decided to play every golf course in the world before I reach the age of 80. This will mean having to play many rounds of golf per week but……someone’s got to do it.
This week was a great one playing with my younger/bigger brother at Scarsdale GC and Winged Foot (West). I hate to say it but the course records at these clubs are still standing….my brother and I are not ! Without question, the superintendent at Winged Foot made the course much, much, much harder since the US Open last year !!
We had a little problem at Scarsdale as my brother kept jumping into the pond like he did 48 years ago when he would sneak on with our brother Johnny to catch turtles and frogs. They were the real “Rambos” as when golfers walked by the pond, they would hide underwater and use a reed to breath. I guess some things never change…..
My brother had a great round though….he said he shot a 73 but he was keeping score and wouldn’t let me see the scorecard so who really knows. I shot a “Plenty-nine” and am playing the worst golf I have ever played. It seems that every time I swing my club to hit the ball, I get hit in the back of the head with a pebble or a stick. My brother, who always stands behind me, keeps saying that the wind picks up just before I swing and blows these things at me …..
At Winged Foot, my brother played very well as did our host who shot an 86. The course was beautiful and much more open than I expected. In spite of not losing a ball the entire round and hitting into 9 bunkers but getting out each time with one shot, I still shot an #@%*. For some reason, there seems to be something wrong with the numbers on my computer keypad. Anyway, I shot somewhere around a “Plenty-nine” again.
Next Friday is the Empire State games (aka NY State Olympics). I’m playing golf in the Masters Division and will be trying not to be the “Master of Disaster”. Les and I are headed to a wedding in Lake George this weekend and then to Vermont to visit friends. I’m not sure how much golf I’ll be playing this week. Maybe I’ll get lucky and we won’t make it back home in time for me to play in the games.
